The wealthy widow Martha Dandridge Custis, aged 27 married George Washington in 1759. For forty years, they shared a life of service to the colonies and the United States that followed.

During the dark days at Valley Forge, Martha Washington was there to support the General and the rag tag troops, who called her Lady Washington. In addition to the soldiers, there were almost 500 women and children at Valley Forge. Martha arrived in February to boost morale. She coordinated meal logistics, entertained political visitors, and wrote military correspondences. She organized local women and sources to supply food and clothing, which were nearly important as her care and moral support. Later Martha Washington would be honored as the first First Lady of the United States.
