Alfred the Great

Alfred was crowned king of the West Saxons in 871 at the age of 22. His reign was highlighted by his defeat of the Viking Danes and his contributions toward the consolidation of England into a united monarchy. Although Alfred did not establish trial by jury, he compiled the best enactments of earlier kings into law. He overhauled the fryd militia and established the burghal system. An intellectual, Alfred brought scholars from all over to Wessex. During his youth he had twice visited Rome.

Restorers' Comment: Body was extensively reworked with new hands, and a better shield and helmet were constructed.
