Father Joseph, François Leclerc du Tremblay, (1577-1638) was a Capuchin monk and a confidant of Cardinal Richelieu. He devoted his life to missionary work and to the shady and delicate diplomatic negotiations with which Richelieu entrusted him. Seen as a rather sinister figure in Richelieu’s government, he is the one who inspired the term “éminence grise”– the man behind the throne.
